When I wrote THE LIMIT I didn’t intend for it to make a political statement. However, if readers want to look at it that way, it’s okay with me.

I’ve had a few reviewers condemn THE LIMIT because adults would NEVER make their children responsible for their debt. Really? And what country are they living in?

Teen Author Boot Camp

The following information is for all teens who dream about becoming a published author–but especially for the teen-authors I met at West Jordan Middle School just before Christmas. This is a great opportunity to rub shoulders with authors and learn a ton about writing. I highly recommend it.

The TEEN AUTHOR BOOT CAMP is once again being held for teens only! No adults allowed. (Except the presenters, I’m assuming.)

Basic info:

Sat. March 10, 2012, at UVU
Brandon Mull and ten other authors will be there.
Cost: $39 all day includes tuition, lunch, all-you-can-drink soda,
backpack, and entry into a first chapter contest (up to ten pages
critiqued. First prize worth $100)

Post Provo Teen Book Fest

Okay, I’m later than I would have liked in gushing about how fabulous the Teen Book Fest at the Provo Library on November 12 turned out to be. What a fabulous afternoon of author presentations, crafts, and activities. The event started out with a sell-out crowd (the tickets were free, but hey) to hear key-note speaker Ally Condie. As one of the presenting authors, my two daughters and I were treated with reserved front row seats. Ally was great, telling her experience in creating ‘Matched’ and her newly released ‘Crossed’.

The big ballroom in the library was then transformed into Dystopian Boot Camp. There were all sorts of activities from ‘Hunger Games Archery’ to ‘Get Matched with your Perfect Mate’. For ‘The Limit’ they had ‘Pool Noodle Jousting’ (SO COOL and so much fun) (Read the book, you’ll make the connection) and a fantastic debt/credit game that was like The Price is Right with a fun twist–and candy bars for the winners.

Each author gave a presentation and signed books. The final even of the day was a panel featuring all four authors–Elana Johnson and Robinson Wells were there as well as me and Ally.

The Provo Library puts on amazing events every year. If you missed this one, make sure you stop by next year.

Provo Library Teen Book Fest

This is going to be so cool! The theme this year of this awesome event is Dystopian–so THE LIMIT will feel right at home. Four authors will be in attendance, and the library will have crafts and activities related to each book. I’ve heard a rumor that there will be a credit/debit game (something like THE PRICE IS RIGHT with a twist) to honor THE LIMIT. I can’t wait to see exactly what they came up with.

Other authors featured are Ally Condie, Elana Johnson, and Robinson Wells. November 12 is the day to mark on your calendars. Click here for all the details.

Tooele and Award Ceremony

Busy day coming up on Saturday. I’ll be spending most of the day in Tooele, Utah at the Children’s Book Festival. There’s a ticketed ’Brunch with the Authors’ event in the morning and free activities in the afternoon. Click here for all the details. It should be a lot of fun.

Saturday night the Utah Book Award winners will be anounced. THE LIMIT is one of the three finalists in the children’s category.

I Love Scholastic Even More

Scholastic Book Orders is being so great to THE LIMIT. Not only did they give me a prime spot in the book order–front page, top, center–they’re showing me all sorts of love on their website. On one page they have a short list titled Picks Kids Love. It includes a Newberry pack, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Percy Jackson, and THE LIMIT. Unbelievable. Another list on a different page titled Hot New Releases has THE LIMIT at the top. Scholastic is also offering THE LIMIT in a special discounted classroom set for teachers. And they’ve written up a Reading Group Guide for THE LIMIT including discussion questions and classroom activities. Check it out click here

I love Scholastic book orders. As a kid there was nothing more exciting than flipping through those pages and looking at all the wonderful books I could buy–if I only saved up enough allowance. When my oldest daughter brought home her first Scholastic Book Order from kindergarten, I was almost giddy–much more excited than she was–and I ordered way too many books (now that my spending power had increased dramatically from my elementary school days).

I am thrilled to announce that THE LIMIT is featured in the October issue of the Scholastic Tab book order. To be part of something that has meant so much to me for so many years is really a dream come true for me. Thank you, Scholastic!

2 Out of 5 Violence Rating

A couple of weeks ago, before I took my kids to a movie, we were checking out a website we found to see if the movie was appropriate for kids. Now, this site must have an extremely strict audience in mind, because they were listing every little tiny thing that might offend someone’s great-grandmother somewhere in the universe. My kids and I were getting a good laugh out of things like–A man and a woman almost kiss three times (under sexual content) or A man slams his fist against a table (for violent content).

The funny thing was just a few days later I stumbled across a website that did a similar type of rating on THE LIMIT! I actually love these types of ratings–because they give the parents all the information and turn over the decision to them. But I must say it gave me a good chuckle! Check it out. click here

Layton Utah Barnes & Noble
